Dairy King - Taft
About This Spot
Pull up to Dairy King and you’ll find yourself stepping into a slice of small-town Texas charm — a humble, unpretentious ice cream shop and casual eatery humming quietly along the stretch of US-181 in Taft. It’s one of those places where the pace slows just enough to savor a late afternoon treat, a simple burger, or some crispy, satisfying sides after a morning of work or a leisurely drive through town.
The atmosphere carries a nostalgic, drive-in vibe, with locals filtering in for familiar comforts. There’s an easygoing rhythm here — not polished or flashy, but warm and welcoming in its honest simplicity. It’s the kind of spot where the clink of soda bottles, the sizzle from the kitchen, and friendly exchanges create a lived-in feeling that invites you to settle in and stay a while.
On the menu, you’ll find a mix that speaks to those seeking both indulgence and nostalgia. From the homemade-style ice cream treats and refreshing lemonades to hearty, well-loved classics like burgers layered with fresh ingredients, crispy fried okra, or crunchy onion rings, it’s a comforting nod to Texas roadside fare. The redfish tacos and shrimp baskets reflect a coastal influence, balancing the heartier offerings with touches of local flavor. Whether it’s a quick snack or a casual meal, the food feels straightforward, honest, and rooted in everyday enjoyment.
More than anything, Dairy King embodies the easy pleasure of a neighborhood hub — not defined by trends but by the small moments of connection, the steady stream of friendly faces, and the simple good taste of familiar favorites. It’s a modest place with a lot of heart, where the food and the atmosphere come together to offer a quietly satisfying experience worth revisiting.

Delicious burgers, chicken bites and okra. Looks like a little run down restaurant but it’s packed with some good food.

Jumbo shrimp basket was fine but definitely not the freshest. I love the redfish tacos but be warned, they are just cabbage, tartar sauce and fish. Very good. Went back and got the redfish basket and was very happy. Also love the lemonade!

First visit and I got two redfish tacos as recommended by a work friend. They were off the chain good. Will be back for sure!

I had passed through Taft a couple of times but never saw this place when it was open; I thought it had been abandoned. However, when it was open, it was busy, and I was convinced there must be a good reason for that. So, I decided to order lunch—specifically, the Red Fish Filet sandwich and batter-fried veggies. I chose the mushrooms as my side. The ranch dressing that accompanied the veggie dish was excellent. The sandwich came in a large bun and was absolutely delicious! The fried mushrooms were of plenty. The customer service was friendly, and I could tell right away that it was a family-run business because there was an "In Memory Of" poster for a beloved young man displayed in the side window.
